September 11, 2025•3 min read

If you are thinking about buying a home in Montgomery County, PA, or you just want more time outside, the county has a long list of parks, preserves and trails to explore. Here is a look at some of the best outdoor spaces in Montgomery County, from national and state parks to county trails near Huntingdon Valley and the Philadelphia border.

Valley Forge National Historical Park

Valley Forge National Historical Park covers about 3,500 acres in Montgomery and Chester counties, near King of Prussia. The park has more than 35 miles of designated trails, including the paved Joseph Plumb Martin Trail, which covers 8.7 miles in total with a 5 mile inner loop and is popular with walkers, runners and cyclists. The Schuylkill River Trail also passes through the park.

Green Lane Park

Green Lane Park in upper Montgomery County spans about 3,400 acres around the Green Lane Reservoir. The county park has more than 20 miles of trails for hiking, biking, horseback riding and cross country skiing, plus campgrounds, disc golf and a summer concert series.

Evansburg State Park

Evansburg State Park covers 3,349 acres along Skippack Creek, across parts of Lower Providence, Skippack, Worcester, Towamencin and Lower Salford townships. It has about 26 miles of trails for hiking, horseback riding and mountain biking, trout fishing on Skippack Creek and an 18 hole golf course.

Fort Washington State Park

Fort Washington State Park covers 493 acres in Springfield and Whitemarsh townships, with the Wissahickon Creek running through it. Each fall, from September 1 to October 31, birders gather on the park’s observation deck for the Hawk Watch to count migrating raptors.

Norristown Farm Park

Norristown Farm Park is a 690 acre working farm in East Norriton, West Norriton and Norristown, run by the state in partnership with Montgomery County. Stony Creek flows through the park, and visitors come for walking, biking, fishing and picnicking.

The Perkiomen Trail and Schuylkill River Trail

The Perkiomen Trail runs about 19 miles from the Schuylkill River Trail in Oaks, near Valley Forge, north to the borough of Green Lane, passing Lower Perkiomen Valley Park, Central Perkiomen Valley Park and other parks along the way. From Valley Forge, the Schuylkill River Trail continues southeast toward Philadelphia and northwest toward Phoenixville.

Outdoor Spaces Near Huntingdon Valley

In eastern Montgomery County, Lorimer Park in Abington Township protects about 230 acres along Pennypack Creek. The county’s Pennypack Trail, a 6.2 mile crushed stone trail, runs from Rockledge through Abington, Lower Moreland and Bryn Athyn to County Line Road in Huntingdon Valley. Nearby, the Pennypack Ecological Restoration Trust in Huntingdon Valley has conserved more than 900 acres, and its preserve trails are open dawn to dusk every day of the year.

What Parks Mean When You Are Buying a Home

Being close to a park or trail is on a lot of buyers’ wish lists, but the details matter. Homes near busy trailheads can see more traffic and parking on weekends, while others back up to preserved land that is unlikely to be developed. If you want to live near one of these outdoor spaces, I can pull recent sales and current listings in the surrounding townships and walk you through what to expect.

Tips for Visiting

  • Check the park’s website before you go for trail maps, parking and seasonal hours.

  • Visit popular spots like Valley Forge early in the day or on weekdays to avoid crowds.

  • Bring water and dress for the weather, since many trails are unpaved.
